Eclipse Science Day

07/22/2017, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Adventure Science Center map

There's only ONE MONTH until darkness descends on Nashville during a total solar eclipse! Since its the first total solar eclipse to hit what is now Nashville since July 29, 1478, the time to prepare is now. Join us for a day exploring the science of eclipses while learning a bit more about how to keep yourself safe during this celestial phenomenon.

Special Activities:

Do you know how to safely look at an eclipse? Take a look at some potential safety gear and see if you can determine which are safe and which are not!
How close do YOU live to the path of totality? Add a pin to our map and scope out some good viewing locations!
One of many amazing sights we can only see during a total solar eclipse is the outer atmosphere of the sun, the corona. Make your very own hand-crafted version of what the corona looks like and take it home as a reminder of what to look for on August 21st!
  • PLUNGER SUNDIAL (Weather Permitting)
As you come in to join the fun, draw a line along the shadow of one of our plungers and sign your name. Before you leave, draw another line to see how much your shadow has moved! (Don’t worry, the plungers are clean!)
  • SUNSPOTTER (Weather Permitting)
Using a device called a sunspotter, you can take a look at the sun without fear of eye damage. What can you see when you take a look?

Special Presentations:

  • ECLIPSE: THE SUN REVEALED at 11:30, 1:30 & 3:30 (tickets required)
The newest Sudekum Planetarium production takes you on an exploration of eclipses... just in time for the Total Solar Eclipse coming this August! ECLIPSE: The Sun Revealed takes you on a journey through the historical and cultural view of eclipses, the geometry that gives us eclipses, how to safely view an eclipse, and even gives a first-hand account of one eclipse chaser's experience during a total solar eclipse.
  • ECLIPSE 101
Come learn everything you need to know to enjoy the upcoming eclipse! Enjoy a live demonstration of why and when eclipses happen and what makes this one such a special event, but not the end of the world. The goal is to for YOU to safely observe this once in a lifetime astronomical event. We’ll have samples of what you CAN observe the Sun with and advice on what to never do. Learn how to photograph the Sun safely and get that amazing selfie. Bring your eclipse questions as we continue the countdown to Eclipse 2017.
