Nano Day

03/24/2018, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Adventure scienc map

Description:

Celebrate the Wonders of Nano!

Nanoscience and nanotechnology are the study and application of extremely small things and can be used across all the of science fields, such as chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering. Come learn how nano plays into your life with exciting hands-on activities included with general admission!

Activities:

  • SENSE THE NANO
Even though you can’t see individual nanoparticles, you can use your other senses to explore this tiny world! Use an air cannon to see and feel nanoparticles in action, and explore the smell of nanoparticles in a cool balloon demonstration.
  • A MAGIC HOVERCRAFT RIDE (in Eureka Theater on the 2nd Floor)
Feel the POWER of nanoparticles as you take a ride on the science center’s hovercraft, which uses moving air particles to lift you off the ground!
  • SIZE THEM UP!
Through two quick labs, you can explore how nanoparticles behave differently from larger particles. In the first, you will find out why different sunscreen formulas are different colors when they rub into your skin. In the second, we’ll see how alka seltzer tablets behave differently when they are crushed into different sizes.
  • A BEAUTIFUL BIRD
We’ll get up close with nanoparticles in the natural world and explore how peacock feathers display all those beautiful colors!

Community Partners:

We're thrilled to have Vanderbilt/Fisk Materials Research Society and Vanderbilt Students Volunteering for Science coming out to support and enhance the celebration! Stay tuned for more information.
