Teacher Support Materials are provided for each program. These provide vocabulary lists, student activities to use before and after your visit, exhibit connections, and resources. You'll also find Tennessee Science Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) to match our programs to your curriculum.

When you book the BIG WEATHER EXPERIENCE, your students will:

  • Watch Forces of Nature in the Sudekum Planetarium
  • Take part in a 25-minute Extreme Weather program
  • Enjoy a 15-minute Storm Theatre presentation suitable for all ages

    Magnets are an integral part of our everyday lives, used in transportation, medical testing and electronics. Explore the physical properties of magnets and how electro-magnets work through a series of interactive demonstrations.

    What happens when dramatic changes in Earth’s atmosphere combine with other forces of nature? Explore the conditions and science behind some of Earth’s most extreme natural events.

  • Energy Transformations

    Explore the science of heat, light and sound energy. Observe lightning-like sparks, glowing plasma and ultraviolet light demonstrations that will have your students on the edge of their seats!

  • Matter Matters

    Maximum 75 students

    You think snow and ice are cold? Wait until you get up close and personal with Liquid Nitrogen at -346°F! Find out how everyday objects behave when heat energy is drastically added or taken away. Non-refundable materials fee of $30 per program is required.

  • Amazing Reactions!

    Maximum 75 students

    Observe exciting endothermic and exothermic reactions and color changes using acid/ base indicators. Your students will be inspired by the chemistry in this energetic show!

  • Amusement Park Physics STEM Learning Lab

    Grade 5-6, Maximum 30 participants

    Students employ engineering and collaboration skills to build a roller coaster with specific characteristics (loops, curves) to understand potential and kinetic energy transfers in amusement rides.

  • Robotics STEM Learning Lab

    maximum 20 students
    $5 per person

    Working in teams of two or three, students build and program LEGO® Mindstorms® robots capable of meeting challenges designed to promote 21st century team building skills. Students see the important STEM relationships to gain a deeper understanding of the design and invention process.

  • Squid Dissection STEM Learning Lab

    Maximum 30 participants

    Through squid dissection, students inspect unique internal and external features, such as the beak and ink sac, of this ocean dwelling invertebrate. A lab deposit of $50 is required.

  • Bone Detectives STEM Learning Lab

    Maximum 30 participants

    Examine how the physical characteristics of the human skeletal system reveal secrets of the human body. Use measurement and deduction skills to solve a forensic mystery.

  • Flower Dissection STEM Learning Lab

    Maximum 30 participants

    Budding botanists work in small groups to dissect a flower, such as Alstroemeria, to explore its physical characteristics. Be amazed at the detail of a leaf, plant cells or pollen grains when viewed under a compound microscope. A lab deposit of $50 is required.

  • Engineer It - Wind Turbines STEM Learning Lab

    Maximum 30 participants

    Experiment with blade shape and size to determine the most efficient design for a wind turbine that generates the greatest amount of voltage. Use scientific tools, math and problem-solving skills to collect data and compare results.

  • It's Electric! Circuitry STEM Learning Lab

    Maximum 30 participants

    Partners collaborate in a guided inquiry lab with challenges that include building series and parallel circuits to make a light bulb glow, a motor spin, and a fan turn into a flying saucer.

Sudekum Planetarium

$3 per person, maximum 166 seats, allow 1 hour
  • Astronaut

    Grades 4 and up
    Experience a rocket launch from inside the body of an astronaut. Float around inside the International Space Station. Discover the perils that lurk in space as we subject Chad, our test astronaut, to everything that space has to throw at him. Find out what it takes to become an astronaut.

  • Forces of Nature

    Grades 4 and up
    Get up close and personal to erupting volcanoes, devastating earthquakes, and powerful storms as scientists travel the world trying to understand what causes these dangerous natural events. Risking their lives for scientific discovery, these experts forge their way through volcanic flows, along treacherous fault lines, and in cars heading straight toward a raging twister. A National Geographic production.

  • Natural Selection: Darwin's Mystery of Mysteries

    Grades 4 and up
    Join young Charles Darwin on an adventurous voyage of exploration circumnavigating the globe on the HMS Beagle. Witness the thrill of scientific discovery by seeing the world through Darwin’s eyes. Make observations about the spectacular scenery and let the pieces of the scientific puzzle slowly but surely fall into place. Allow Darwin himself to reveal the simple and beautiful mechanism that explains the origin of species: Natural Selection.

  • Nine Planets and Counting

    Grades 3 and up
    How many planets are there in our solar system? Nine, right? Or is it eight? Maybe it's ten, or twelve, or more. Take a tour to explore the variety of objects that populate our solar system. And just what IS a planet, anyway? The answer may surprise you.

  • Rusty Rocket's Last Blast

    Grades 1-5
    Rusty Rocket has one final mission to command: an introductory tour of the solar system for a new class of rocket rookies. Along the way, Rusty highlights the wide variety of environments in the solar system, the great distances between the planets, and the spacecraft that explore them.

  • Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure

  • Skywatchers of Africa

    Grades 3 and up
    For thousands of years, Africans have used their knowledge of the sky to build their societies, shape their spiritual lives, and meet their physical needs for survival. Skywatchers of Africa highlights the diversity of African astronomy, examines cultural uses of the sky that developed over thousands of years, and celebrates our shared human experience.

  • STARS

    Grades 5 and up
    Witness the explosive end of massive stars and the dramatic formation of others. Use the electromagnetic spectrum to see how stars create and release the energy that powers the universe.
