Mental Illness, Mass Shootings and the Politics of American Firearms

Tuesday, April 15, 2014
7 p.m. @ Adventure Science Center
Free and open to the public

Jonathan M. Metzl, MD, PhD
Frederick B. Retschler II Professor of Sociology
Director, Center for Medicine, Health and Society
Professor of Psychiatry, Vanderbilt

Dr. Metzl will explore the connections between gun violence, mass shootings, neuroscience, and mental illness. He will discuss how mass shootings reveal more about particular instances than they do about population-level actions. And, how decisions about which crimes American culture diagnoses as “crazy” and which crimes it labels as “sane” are driven as much by the politics of particular cultural moments as by the actions of individually disturbed brains.

This event is sponsored by the Vanderbilt/NIMH Silvio O. Conte Center for Neuroscience Research, NIH Award P50 MH096972 to Vanderbilt University. For additional information, please visit
