Dissection Labs

Dive In Even Deeper

OCEAN ANIMAL INVESTIGATIONS

You don't need to be near the beach to investigate the cool creatures that live their lives under the sea. In these hands-on dissection labs, you can learn more about the inner workings of these creatures, including getting an up-close-and-personal look at some very unique animal adaptations. These labs are recommended for any visitors ages 6 and up. Please review the guidelines below for each level. Tools and safety gear (goggles, gloves) will be provided and must be utilized properly at all times. Please wear closed-toe shoes.

Lab Fee Add-On Cost: $10 for members; $12.50 for not-yet-members

Lab fee includes a single dissection specimen and use of any lab tools and safety gear. Specimen can be shared and dissected by up to 2 students, if you so choose. Please indicate when registering if multiple students (siblings, friends, family, etc.) will be sharing a specimen. Membership or paid admission to Adventure Science Center is required.

Levels:

  • LEVEL 1: Starfish & Clam (Introductory)
Ideal for your first-time participating in a dissection or lab environment. We will investigate the arms of the starfish and the inside of a clam, while discussing how these animals survive in ocean environments. Procedure will require use of dissection scissors.

  • LEVEL 2: Squid (Intermediate)
This lab requires that learners be somewhat familiar with a dissection lab environment. We will dissect squid, identifying organ systems and parts of the body, while investigating the characteristics that help squid survive in ocean environments. Procedure will require the use of dissection scissors, probe, and tweezers.

  • LEVEL 3: Dogfish Shark (Advanced)
Learners should be comfortable in a dissection lab environment and capable of cutting into these larger specimen with scalpels. In this lab, we will locate, identify, & dissect external & internal parts of the shark, investigating the organ systems. Procedure will require use of scalpel, dissection scissors, probe and tweezers.

Please Note:

All levels require that students are able to follow instructions and stay in their seats throughout the class. Please consider the maturity and motor skills of your learner when selecting a lab experience. Any specimen encountered in our lab will be preserved specimen that are no longer living. Laboratory and dissection activities will be conducted with consideration & appreciation for the organism. Any laboratory misconduct will result in being asked to leave the lab without refund.
