BE PART OF THE ADVENTURE!

The Adventure Science Center internship program is designed to assist students who wish to gain experience in the field of museums and non-profits. Internship opportunities provide a chance for current undergraduate and graduate students to acquire professional and educational skills while working alongside Adventure Science Center staff.

Requirements:

  • Intern candidates are requested to be enrolled in an accredited college. Interns are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship, though it is not required.
  • Internship placement is based on an applicant’s interest, skills, experience and Science Center needs.
  • Internships are unpaid and require a commitment of at least 12 weeks with a minimum of 8 hours per week.
  • All accepted interns must complete and pass a background check.

Application Deadlines:

Internships are offered in the fall, spring and summer semesters, and interns are encouraged to make arrangements with their respective universities for course credit. If accepted into the intern program, Adventure Science Center will be happy to provide the necessary documentation and feedback that universities require for course credit.

  • Spring Internship: (February-May) January 15
  • Summer Internship: (June-August) May 1
  • Fall Internship: offered on a limited basis.

Spring 2019 Internships:

Youth Engagement Internship

The position will function as part of a collaborative team of volunteer and youth services professionals across the organization. The internship will offer dynamic opportunities to assist in the implementation of innovative programs for youth. The Youth Engagement Intern will develop unique ways to engage and build relationships with youth and schools in the local community.

This position will provide an opportunity for interns to:

  • Learn about the importance of audience target communications
  • Gain insight into the planning and execution of youth programming in a museum setting
  • Learn about event planning and execution
  • Acquire project management and leadership skills
     

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive youth recruitment plan:
    • Work with ASC staff to develop a robust list of community partners and points of contact to improve youth recruitment
    • Research ASC volunteer databases to determine previous youth recruitment strategies and level of program diversity
    •  Identify ways to increase youth diversity
  • Assist in youth volunteer communication and outreach (creating flyers, social media content, monthly newsletters, etc.):
    • Supporting the distribution of marketing materials for ASC youth programs and conducting research on youth trends of communication
  • Assist in the execution of youth programs, events, and trainings
  • Assist with planning for fall 2019 ASC College Fair
  • Generate program deliverables to improve youth programming
    • Youth experience surveys and feedback reports
    • Diversity reports
    • Communication trends reports
    • Training manuals and recruitment plans
       

Qualifications

  • Interest in a science field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Organized with great attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Professionalism, discretion, and maturity in dealing with confidential information
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time during programs and events; able to kneel and sit on the floor.

Hour/Time Commitment: Time commitment must be at least 10 weeks with a minimum of 8 hours weekly. All interns are asked to record their service hours through our online Volunteer Information Center (VIC).

Compensation: This position is unpaid. Students are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship. Adventure Science Center will work with students to complete all required paperwork and documentation. Interns are responsible for their housing, meals, and travel expenses. All interns receive discounts in Adventure Science Center’s café and gift shop on their days of service.

People & Culture Management Internship

The intern will work in the People & Culture department and work closely with the Associate Director of People & Culture. The Associate Director of People & Culture will assign projects, tasks and dutes. All assignments will be in keeping with the concept the intern is here to assist in achieving the goals of the People & Culture department while also having an enriching learning experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process Onboarding Paperwork - Legal, compliance and company policy
  • Job Descriptions - Assist in research and update job description portfolio
  • Policy Manual - Assist in research and update of Policy Manual Material and documentation
  • Training - Assist in writing and formulating training material at staff and manager level
  • Customer Service - Assist in developing customer service theme and training module

Qualifications: Intern candidates are requested to be a Junior or Senior enrolled in an accredited college. Interns are encourage to obtain college credit for their internship.
