BE PART OF THE ADVENTURE!

The Adventure Science Center internship program is designed to assist students who wish to gain experience in the field of museums and non-profits. Internship opportunities provide a chance for current undergraduate and graduate students to acquire professional and educational skills while working alongside Adventure Science Center staff.

SPRING 2018 INTERNSHIPS:

Development Internship

Get behind the scenes...

The Development team is seeking an energetic intern to assist with the day-to-day operations. This position will be a support role assisting the planning and execution of a diverse set of projects, including giving campaigns, museum membership, fundraising events, and database management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Donor, member, and events customer service.
  • Assist Development team with prospect researching, fundraising campaigns, and database maintenance.
  • Assist Membership Coordinator with processing and fulfilling memberships.
  • Assist Event Manager with event planning as needed.
  • Attend fundraising/member events and donor receptions as needed for support.

Qualifications:

  • Intern candidates are requested to be a Junior or Senior enrolled in an accredited college. Interns are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship.
  • Interest in non-profit management and fundraising.

Hour/Time Commitment:

Time commitment must be at least 12 weeks with a minimum of 8 hours weekly. All interns are asked to record their service hours through our online Volunteer Information Center (VIC).

Compensation:

This position is unpaid. Students are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship. Adventure Science Center will work with students to complete all required paperwork and documentation. Interns are responsible for their housing, meals, and travel expenses. All interns receive discounts in Adventure Science Centers café and gift shop on their days of service.

Human Resources Management Internship

Learn about HR in the nonprofit realm...

The intern will work in the Human Resource department and work closely with the Human Resource Manager. The HR manager will assign projects, tasks and duties. All assignments will be in keeping with the concept the intern is here to assist in achieve the goals of the HR department while also having an enriching learning experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process onboarding paperwork–legal, compliance and company policy
  • Job Descriptions–assist in research and update job descriptions portfolio
  • Policy Manual–assist in research and update of Policy Manual material and documentation
  • Training–assist in writing and formulating training material at staff and manager level
  • Customer Service–assist in developing customer service theme and training module

Early Childhood Internship

Bring science to life...

The intern will function as part of a collaborative team of educators across the organization. The internship will offer dynamic opportunities to assist in the implementation of innovative education programs for young children and families to explore and engage with science.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist in implementation of innovative education programs that enegage families and early learners in the Science Center environment through:

  • Developing and facilitating engaging, developmentally-appropriate educational programs with a focus on the early childhood exhibition (Destination Exploration)
  • Managing supplies and resources for early childhood programming
  • Serving as a customer service ambassador on the Science Center's floor by welcoming and engaging guests, answering questions and explaining exhibit features
  • Cleaning and resetting exhibits during opening/closing times and throughout the day
  • Collaborating with colleagues in Education and other departments on special projects for early childhood guests

Qualifications:

  • ​​​​​Intern candidates are requested to be a Junior or Senior enrolled in an accredited college. Interns are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with children ages 10 and under. Experience working with children ages 0-5 preferred.
  • Knowledge of experiential education approaches with a minimum of six months experience in early childhood education or child development program; teaching experience preferred.
  • Excellent customer service skills, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time during programs; ability to kneel and sit on the floor.

Hour/Time Commitment:

Monday availability required, with flexibility for the rest of the week.

Public Programs Internship

Engage in STEM education...

Adventure Science Center's Education Department seeks an intern to assist with planning and facilitating public STEM programming to guests of all ages. This position involves working with staff Educators to research, design and implement activities as part of the Science Center's public event days, public family labs, and web-based STEM content. Intern will also assist with gathering data about programming for evaluation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and contribute to ideation and execution of public event days (includes helping facilitate activities from all science areas and for all ages)
  • Create bi-weekly web content for ASC's blogs and webpages
  • Assist with implementing surveys and analyzing program participant feedback
  • Assist with organization and inventory of materials and supplies for public programs

Qualifications:

  • ​​​​​Intern candidates are requested to be a Junior or Senior enrolled in an accredited college. Interns are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable presenting STEM content to an audience.
  • Ability to work and research tasks both independently and in a collaborative environment.
  • Prior experience in education, event planning, program evaluation and/or youth development is a plus.

Hour/Time Commitment:

  • February – May
  • 8-12 hours weekly; preferably recurring on the same day of the week
  • 2 Saturdays per month required (most public programs take place on Saturdays)
  • All interns are asked to record their service hours through our online Volunteer Information Center (VIC)

  • Intern candidates are requested to be enrolled in an accredited college. Interns are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship, though it is not required.
  • Internship placement is based on an applicant’s interest, skills, experience and Science Center needs.
  • Internships are unpaid and require a commitment of at least 12 weeks with a minimum of 8 hours per week.
  • All accepted interns must complete and pass a background check.

Application Deadline:

Internships are offered in the fall, spring and summer semesters, and interns are encouraged to make arrangements with their respective universities for course credit. If accepted into the intern program, Adventure Science Center will be happy to provide the necessary documentation and feedback that universities require for course credit.

  • Spring Internship: (February-May) January 1
  • Summer Internship: (June-August) April 1
  • Fall Internships offered on a limited basis.
