BE PART OF THE ADVENTURE!

The Adventure Science Center internship program is designed to assist students who wish to gain experience in the field of museums and non-profits. Internship opportunities provide a chance for current undergraduate and graduate students to acquire professional and educational skills while working alongside Adventure Science Center staff.

SUMMER 2018 INTERNSHIPS:

Early Childhood Internship

Bring science to life...

The intern will function as part of a collaborative team of educators across the organization. The internship will offer dynamic opportunities to assist in the implementation of innovative education programs for young children and families to explore and engage with science.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist in implementation of innovative education programs that engage families and early learners in the Science Center environment through:

  • Developing and facilitating engaging, developmentally-appropriate educational programs with a focus on the early childhood exhibition (Destination Exploration)
  • Managing supplies and resources for early childhood programming
  • Serving as a customer service ambassador on the science center's floor by welcoming and engaging guests, answering questions and explaining exhibit features
  • Cleaning and resetting exhibits during opening/closing times and throughout the day
  • Collaborating with colleagues in Education and other departments on special projects for early childhood guests

Qualifications:

  • ​​​​​Intern candidates are requested to be a Junior or Senior enrolled in an accredited college. Interns are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with children ages 10 and under. Experience working with children ages 0-5 preferred.
  • Knowledge of experiential education approaches with a minimum of six months experience in early childhood education or child development program; teaching experience preferred.
  • Excellent customer service skills, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time during programs; ability to kneel and sit on the floor.

Hour/Time Commitment:

Time commitment must be at least 12 weeks with a minimum of 8 hours weekly. All interns are asked to record their service hours through our online Volunteer Information Center (VIC).

Monday availability required, with flexibility for the rest of the week.

Compensation:

This position is unpaid. Students are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship. Adventure Science Center will work with students to complete all required paperwork and documentation. Interns are responsible for their housing, meals, and travel expenses. All interns receive discounts in Adventure Science Center’s café and gift shop on their days of service.

ScienceQuest Summer Camp Internship

Create incredible memories...

The Camp Internship is intended to provide an inside look at Adventure Science Center's camp programs. The intern will have opportunities to see the day-to-day operation of summer camp at the science center, help with the planning and execution of camp programming, and will be a point person for the two Transit Adventures (Transit Camp) happening in June and July. The ideal candidate will have an interest in summer camp programs and informal science education. They should also have a love for kids, be a team player, and have a desire to develop skills in the areas of leadership and programming.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily assistance at camp (check-in & check-out, guiding campers, helping with programs, etc.)
  • Work on projects associated with summer camp as a whole (assist in the planning of future weeks of camp)
  • Be a point person for the two Transit Adventures in June and July (help follow up with contacts and plans)
  • Serve as a counselor for the two Transit Adventures (each camp is one week long)

Qualifications:

  • ​​​Intern candidates are requested to be an a Junior or Senior enrolled in an accredited college. Interns are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship.
  • Must have prior experience working with elementary-age children.
  • The candidate should be able to juggle multiple projects at a time.
  • Must be able work independently and have great time-management skills.

Hour/Time Commitment:

May 2018 – July 2018 with at least 8 hours weekly.

Assist with planning and execution of Transit Camp, taking place June 25-29 and July 23-27.

Membership & Events Internship

Peek into our inner workings...

Members are at the heart of Adventure Science Center, providing operational support while receiving benefits like year-round membership. The Development team is seeking an energetic intern to help enhance the benefit of membership. This position will primarily support three events this summer, including Beyond Rubik’s Cube member morning, Red, White & Boom (4th of July), and Star Wars vs. Star Trek Way Late Play Date, through the incorporation of exclusive member experiences at each. Duties will include planning, coordinating, and executing member exclusive experiences, working with multiple departments of the Science Center, and learning the basic administrative aspects of membership and events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute member-only experience at Beyond Rubik’s Cube member morning on Saturday, June 2, 2018.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute member-only experience at Red, White & Boom fundraising event on Wednesday July 4, 2018.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute member-only experience at Star Wars vs. Star Trek Way Late Play Date on Thursday, July 26, 2018.
  • Assist membership team with administrative duties as needed, including fulfillment of membership materials, data entry, and checking in members during their visit in the lobby.
  • Assist event team with administrative duties related to all three events as needed, including data entry and pulling registration lists.

Qualifications:

  • Intern candidates are requested to be a Junior or Senior enrolled in an accredited college. Interns are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship.
  • Interest in non-profit management, fundraising, or event planning.
  • Intern must be able to attend at least two of the three events related to the internship.

Hour/Time Commitment:

Time commitment must be at least 12 weeks with a minimum of 8 hours weekly. All interns are asked to record their service hours through our online Volunteer Information Center (VIC).

  • Intern candidates are requested to be enrolled in an accredited college. Interns are encouraged to obtain college credit for their internship, though it is not required.
  • Internship placement is based on an applicant’s interest, skills, experience and Science Center needs.
  • Internships are unpaid and require a commitment of at least 12 weeks with a minimum of 8 hours per week.
  • All accepted interns must complete and pass a background check.

Application Deadlines:

Internships are offered in the fall, spring and summer semesters, and interns are encouraged to make arrangements with their respective universities for course credit. If accepted into the intern program, Adventure Science Center will be happy to provide the necessary documentation and feedback that universities require for course credit.

  • Spring Internship: (February-May) January 1
  • Summer Internship: (June-August) May 1
  • Fall Internships offered on a limited basis.
