Director of Marketing and Communications (Full-Time)

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Adventure Science Center is entering an exciting, transformative phase of its 73-year existence as a family-oriented, fun science destination in Nashville. Over the next few years the Science Center will redefine the nature of its experience as best-in-class for curious and creative minds of all ages. As the Director of Marketing and Communications, this position will be an essential partner in informing the museum’s direction, understanding and defining the brand of ASC, and communicating our core messages to current and future audiences.

The Director is a key member of the Executive Leadership team, reports directly to the CEO, and manages a three-person team in the daily duties of the Marketing and Communications department. The Director provides strategic and tactical direction of the Science Center’s marketing and communications efforts and plays a leading role in informing and advancing ASC’s vision and goals. The Director of Marketing and Communications must possess highly effective, creative communications and marketing skills and experience and be a positive, outspoken leader who can build the organization’s brand, drive revenue, and thrive within a dynamic, growth-oriented organization. This position also serves as the primary media liaison and often acts as official spokesperson in the absence of or in combination with the CEO.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Marketing, Brand Management, Public Relations, & Leadership

  • Develop and implement a highly creative, multi-pronged plan to:
  • increase annual attendance and associated revenues
  • expand our core audience while attracting new constituents
  • raise the public profile and community value of the Science Center
  • advance membership and fundraising
  • support the priority initiatives of the museum
  • advance messaging around the Science Center’s vision to be: a ‘must-see’ destination for all ages; the best science museum; a collaborative hub for science and innovation learning; and a positive influence on young visitors’ view of science and themselves
  • Provide counsel to the CEO and the Executive Leadership team regarding marketing, public relations, and the Science Center’s brand
  • Collaborate with Operations, Exhibits and Education as needed to continually evaluate the complete guest/customer experience, service, satisfaction, and attitudes; communicate learnings with the Executive Leadership and other departments as needed to inform decision-making
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of specific marketing and communications strategies/tactics and share the knowledge gained with Leadership to inform their work
  • Foster and engage a robust network of active relationships with outside partners who can support and expand our messaging. These partners include, but are not limited to media outlets, Convention and Visitors Corporation, Chamber of Commerce, and other non-profit partner organizations.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Leadership team on organization-wide planning
  • Work with outside advertising and promotion vendors, where applicable, in order to more effectively promote the Science Center’s core messages and events to its target audiences
  • Lead the Marketing and Communications staff as a creative, effective, collaborative team who excel at implementing innovative approaches to marketing and communications.
  • Coordinate internal museum communications strategies and tactics
  • Keep current with effective marketing and communications strategies, trends and practices in for-profit and non-profit sectors
  • Provide leadership and managerial oversight of marketing and communications team and facilitate collaboration across the organization on branding, marketing, and communications efforts

Administrative, Financial

  • Hire, train, and evaluate Marketing and Communications department staff
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Board Marketing & Communications Committee
  • Contribute to the policy-making and management of the Science Center
  • Prepare and manage annual marketing/communications budget
  • Provide quarterly reports to the Board of Trustees regarding marketing/communications updates, campaigns, and impacts

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND TRAITS

  • Ability to manage large network of relationships with individuals, businesses, media agencies or groups

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of five years of demonstrated team leadership and marketing and/or public relations excellence.
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, communications, or other related area; master’s degree is desirable.

Development Coordinator (Full-Time)

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under direction of the Development Manager, the Development Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the successful implementation of fundraising activities within the Development Department of Adventure Science Center.  Understanding of a moves management strategy and mastery of a donor database are critical skills for this position.  In addition, the Development Coordinator is responsible for database integrity, donation processing and fulfillment, reporting, and administrative tasks for the department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Development

  • Research potential funders/donors and produce prospect profiles as directed by CDO, Director of Major Gifts, and Development Manager.
  • Prepare and submit funding proposals and related documents, including grants, reports, and letters of inquiry, as directed by the Development Manager and Chief Development Officer.
  • Provide capital campaign support for CDO, CEO, and volunteers as directed
  • Maintain and update major gift prospect/donor records, ensuring profiles are current and accurate
  • Ensure gift entry and acknowledgement is completed for non-membership development donations, including thank you letters, annual report lists, donor wall, and other areas of recognition.
  • Ensure the overall integrity of donor data with sensitivity to confidentiality, including duplicate record merging, record importing, routine data cleaning, and query organization.
  • Assist members of Development Team as needed.

Events

  • Provide support to Events team with execution of fundraising events and donor receptions, and facility rentals.
  • Act as point of contact for select facility rentals, maintain a flexible schedule to arrive before or stay after normal business hours.

Administrative

  • Be the point person for inquiries by donors and prospects
  • Schedule and coordinate meetings with board members and donors
  • Produce analytical reports in a timely manner, (e.g. monthly individual, yearly comparative, etc.), including those for other departments outside of development upon request.
  • Produce pledge reminders and invoices in a timely manner
  • Track and reconcile revenue and expenses to budget
  • Track and reconcile revenue and expenses to budget with Finance Department.
  • Process and fulfill requests for general admission tickets, including data entry upon use.
  • Organize and maintain file system (electronically).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education:  Associate degree required Bachelor’s degree a plus
  • Experience:  Minimum of 1-2 years of administrative responsibilities and database management experience; nonprofit setting preferred.
  • Donor database software knowledge is required.  Raiser’s Edge or Altru knowledge preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including superior composition, typing and proofreading skills
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
  • Ability to work events at various hours, including evenings and weekends is required

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • There is manual labor during the set-up and break-down of fundraising events.
  • The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms; use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire regulations.

Exhibit Operator (Part-Time)

It’s an Adventure!

Ever wonder what it feels like to walk on the moon or to be a WWII fighter pilot? Are you a fun, energetic person with a positive attitude?  Do you enjoy an atmosphere filled with people who are enthusiastic, upbeat and open to learning new things?  If so, we have THE job for you.  As an Exhibit Operator you’ll be on the front lines engaging with guests of all ages and helping to enhance their learning as they experience our many state-of-the-art exhibits.

The Adventure Science Center has a long standing tradition as one of Nashville’s premier family attractions. We have an immediate part-time position open for a person who is confident, enthusiastic, energetic, possess good communication skills and capable of interacting effectively with the public.  As an applicant for this position you bring a flexible willingness to learn, with an excitement and appreciation for expanding the minds of our guests. We are hiring a person with the right attitude more than the resume. We will train you.

As an Exhibit Operator:

You will be assisting guest with one or more of our exhibits during their visit to the science center. You will learn fun, interesting information to convey to the guests in an enthusiastic manner. Be aware of safety requirements and comply as you work each day.

Birthday Parties Coordinator (Part-Time)

Position Description – Responsibilities and Requirements:

Adventure Science Center is looking for an upbeat, well-organized person to organize supplies for, and staff children’s birthday parties, including presenting a science-based program to guests. Candidates should be comfortable with making presentations, customer-service oriented, want to work with children and their families and possess computer reservation skills. This is a 14-hour/week position requiring weekend work (Saturdays and Sundays 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) .
