Adventure Science Center to Host Special Eclipse Science Day on Saturday, May 20, at 10 a.m.

A full day of all-things-eclipse including viewing safety, eclipse activities, and eclipse planetarium shows

Nashville, Tenn., May 16, 2017—With under 100 days until a total solar eclipse sweeps across the U.S., giving Nashville the sight of a lifetime, Adventure Science Center (ASC) is working hard to prepare the community and engage people in the excitement.

As part of their special Eclipse Programming Series, ASC will offer a day devoted to all-things-eclipse including an Eclipse 101 learning session, safe viewing tips, eclipse crafts, and Sudekum Planetarium’s original, fulldome, eclipse production, ECLIPSE: The Sun Revealed.  All events, except the planetarium show (tickets required), are free with the price of admission.  Eclipse Science Day begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 20th.

SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES   |  Saturday, May 20
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (free with admission)

This demonstration will arm guests with everything they need to know about the potential dangers of looking directly at the sun, how to view it safely during an eclipse, and how to identify eye safety gear that doesn’t make the grade.
ASC Educators will help guests identify how close they live to the path of totality, add a pin to ASC’s map, and scope out the best location from which to view the eclipse.
The Sun’s corona: one of the many amazing sights visible only during a total solar eclipse. Guests will discover the spectacular outer atmosphere of the sun and make their very own hand-crafted version to take home as a reminder of what to look for on August 21st.
  • PLUNGER SUNDIAL (Weather Permitting)
Guests can learn how to track their time spent at the Science Center in an ingenius (and highly amusing) experiment involving a piece of chalk, the sun, and a toilet bowl plunger. (Don’t worry, the plungers are clean!)
  • SUNSPOTTER (Weather Permitting)
Guests will have a chance to try out a sun spotter, allowing them a rare, and safe, look at the sun during daylight hours.
  • ECLIPSE 101
Part learning, part demo, and part Q & A, this eclipse crash course will provide guests with the skills and know-how to get the most out of this summer’s eclipse. From why eclipses happen to what you need to photograph them to how to see them safely to where to get the best view,  Eclipse 101 has it all.

11: 30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. (additional ticket purchase required)

The newest, fulldome Sudekum Planetarium production will take guests on a fantastic tour of eclipses throughout history: how different cultures interepreted them, their relationship to major scientific discoveries, viewing safety, and the first-hand account of one eclipse chaser who allows you to experience a simulation of his first total solar eclipse.

Activities and presentations included with admission except where noted. Subject to change.
