Adventure Science Center, TierPoint collaborate on special program for two Nashville groups

New program provides transportation, special experiences and a chance to explore the Science Center for members of Watkins Park Community Center and Preston Taylor Ministries on July 22

Nashville, Tenn., July 20, 2017—Creative learning at an informal science education institution like Adventure Science Center is paramount to the learning experience. Increasing research shows that science learned outside the classroom positively affects a student’s achievement in the classroom.

To help provide those learning experiences outside the classroom, ASC has teamed with TierPoint, a national provider of information technology and data center services, to create “Families Experiencing Science Together,” a program that incorporates three main components: transportation, specialized STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Math) experiences, and a chance to explore the Science Center’s hands-on exhibits.

“At Adventure Science Center, we believe science is for everyone,” said Tiffany Farmer, Ph.D., ASC’s Director of Education and Community Engagement. “We’re thankful to TierPoint for making this program possible and look forward to connecting more with our Nashville communities while also showcasing the ‘fun’ in science.”

While ASC has been bringing science learning into select communities through the “Science in Motion” outreach programming, this new program provides the unique opportunity for a visit to the Science Center for students who may not otherwise be able to make the trip.

This first session will highlight a hot topic in Nashville right now – the total solar eclipse coming on Monday, Aug. 21. Families can move through a variety of hands-on activity stations that enlighten and excite with demonstrations and information about everything from solar eclipse safety to the geometry that gives us eclipses.

A special lunch will be provided as an opportunity for the program participants, TierPoint volunteers, and ASC staff to informally socialize together after visiting the exhibits.

The first program will bring members of Watkins Park Community Center and Preston Taylor Ministries to ASC on Saturday, July 22.

Subject to change.
