Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters will close (forever) on October 29
Nashville, Tenn., October 3, 2017—As our volatile planet continues to transform and change from the power of nature’s forces, so must the educational experiences highlighting the natural phenomena that shape our world. After Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters closes on Oct. 29, The Field Museum, Chicago, will recycle pieces of the exhibition into a new experience giving Nashville the last chance to see the installation in its current form.
From earthquakes and tornadoes to hurricanes and volcanoes, the Nature Unleashed exhibition allows guests to explore how these immense geological and meteorological forces have shaped our planet and our world.
To help guests understand how these natural phenomena work, the exhibition features dynamic, multilevel experiences that showcase the power, and the beauty, of each force of nature. Digital displays, breathtaking photographs, inspiring survivor accounts, realistic simulations, and objects from real natural disasters help to create a memorable and stirring adventure for all ages. EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS:
- Hurricanes
With hurricane season in full swing, this timely exhibit provides a perfect opportunity for guests to help their children understand how these phenomena form and their real impact on human lives. Featuring artifacts, photos, and recorded interviews from Hurricane Katrina, this section also helps show how we have advanced in our reporting abilities.
- Earthquakes
After the recent earthquakes in Mexico, this space within the exhibition provides another chance to connect real-life happenings with the science behind the phenomenon. Guests can simulate their own earthquake by jumping on a seismic sensor and test different buildings to see how they stand up against earthquakes. Visuals depicting the different ways tectonic plates shift and break give viewers an inside look into the power of the ground beneath us.
- Tornadoes
This area features a 365-degree theatrical experience where guests are fully immersed in footage taken by a special camera that endured an actual tornado as well as tangible artifacts from the EF-5 tornado that flattened Greensburg, Kansas, in 2007.
- Volcanoes
Kids and adults alike are mesmerized by the power of these natural cauldrons as they touch scale models of the four types of volcanoes and discover their differences and similarities. Guests are encouraged to build and erupt their own volcano to see firsthand the beauty and the destruction this natural force can bring.
- Tsunamis
Discover how an earthquake on the ocean floor can trigger massive tsunamis and watch satellite footage from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami as the wave spread around the globe in this section.
Entry into the Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters exhibition is included with the price of general admission. Nature Unleashed will be at the Science Center through October 29. Supporting Sponsor: TVA. This exhibition and its national tour were developed by The Field Museum, Chicago.
