Seeking Local Scientists for Adventure Science Center Professional Development, Mentoring Program

Scientists on Site program connects the public with current research in Nashville

Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 2, 2017—Nashville ranks seventh in the nation for science and technology fields with job growth in nearly every STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) category since 2006. According to a Forbes article in March, jobs in the STEM industry have grown 13.7 percent while tech industry jobs have risen by 75.6 percent.

Adventure Science Center (ASC) continues to support this growth through the Scientists on Site program, which serves to connect guests with the real science and research happening in the community by facilitating a dialogue with local experts. The program provides participants with four months of professional development training during which they learn how to communicate their research to budding STEM leaders through hands-on activities designed for all ages.

Scientists on Site is also the first of its kind to provide mentorship to students within ASC’s Youth CR3Wprogram to enhance their commitment to science education and provide insight into the culture of their specific scientific discipline.

“An important part of our mission at the Science Center is to inspire the next generation of confident, collaborative problem solvers by sharing the joy of scientific discovery in the everyday world, and the Scientists on Site program is an invaluable resource for doing just that,” said Dr. Tiffany Farmer, Director of Education and Community Engagement. “Being able to connect our Youth CR3W members with a scientist whose interests align with their own creates an incredible way to open doors and pathways to potential future careers that these teens may not even known existed.”

The program requires 6-10 volunteer hours per month between December and April, which includes professional development training, activity development, mentor-mentee job site visits and a special showcase. ASC also asks participants to commit to 2-4 volunteer hours per month between May and October to present the activity developed during the program.

At the close of the program, ASC will host a special event where participants will be recognized and celebrated for their contributions to Scientists on Site program and the community at large. Opportunities will also be available for scientists to get involved with public programs – such as Way Late Play Dates and STEM Career Series for school groups – providing the opportunity for networking and personal interactions.

Scientists who are interested in applying for the Scientists on Site program can visitwww.adventuresci.org/scientists or contact scientists@adventuresci.org for more information. Applications close on Sunday, Nov. 19.
