MAY 24 – SEPT. 14, 2014

Experiment your way to futuristic fun!

The Robots + Us temporary exhibit is a playful look at how biology and engineering are coming together to close the gap between reality and our robot dreams. It provides a hands-on opportunity to explore how building artificial life can teach us about the real thing:

  • Explore Face Detection technology, where you can try on a hat and glasses or put on a mustache to try to find the limits of a machine with face recognition software.
  • Step up to the exhibit’s Robot Arena and watch the impact that beams of light and other obstacles have on the paths they take from point to point.
  • Visit the Garden of Sensory Delights and use your body to control the motion of its wacky robotic flowers.
  • Solve a simple jigsaw puzzle before the Robot Arm does, in a match-up of human vs. machine that tests your precision and speed.
  • and much more!

Included with general admission

This exhibit investigates the making of lifelike machines in robotics, computer science and biomedical engineering. It showcases how those machines can extend our capabilities and change our lives. It also addresses some persistent questions with a surprisingly long history:Could a machine ever be alive? Could we make machines that exceed our own capabilities? Are we, too, a kind of machine?

With its memorable, hands-on components and computer interactives, Robots + Us offers a unique chance to separate the science fiction fantasy image of robots with today’s technical reality and compare our own capabilities with the best we know how to build.
