CELEBRATING VOLUNTEER WEEK by Elisabeth McClain, Volunteer Manager

Time flies when you're doing good for your community! Just a short year ago, our volunteer program was about as new as a volunteer program could get. We had just completed our 4th volunteer orientation and watched in anticipation as our community came together to lend its efforts towards STEM education and science exploration! Today, in honor of National Volunteer Week, I get to look back and celebrate all of the amazing efforts that our growing program has dedicated its time, passion and energy to over the past year. Knowing that a complete list of this year's projects would be too much for one blog post to hold, I have compiled some of the most amazing efforts our volunteers have taken part in to inspire our community...

  • Over 315 volunteers assisted in the celebration of a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event at the Music City Solar Eclipse Festival!
  • Our amazing Youth CR3W team finished a daunting recycled boat project, partnered with the Tennessee Environmental Council to restore a local greenspace and took on leadership roles to mentor new CR3W members... all while volunteering during countless event days and camps themselves!
  • We launched our Explainer program where volunteers can take their passion for teaching to the next level and go through training to lead education activities within the science center!
  • The 60+ volunteers who have joined our program and come in to inspire minds and spark curiosity on a daily basis. These volunteers do it all – everything from greeting visitors at the Planetarium to bringing exciting “pocket” science activities into our exhibit halls!
  • Our volunteers also extended our reach beyond our science center to work with the many corporate and community groups to lend support for various projects – from packing recycled eclipse glasses to leading Math Moves! activities for school groups.

These amazing projects barely scratch the surface on the impact our volunteers have made in our community. THANK YOU to all of our volunteers – from individuals and groups to the interns, Youth CR3W, and Scientists on Site – we appreciate everything that you do to help us fulfill our mission!
