What is the Innovation Incubator makerspace?

On July 1, 2019 we reopened our Innovation Incubator makerspace here in Nashville in a brand new, larger and more sophisticated space.

With state-of-the-art equipment and expert staff, Adventure Science Center wants to help the Nashville community experience maker culture for themselves. Over the next year, we will host workshops and classes that will give you a chance to learn more about “making” and have fun!

But what exactly is a makerspace? What can you expect when you visit Innovation Incubator? And what skills will you and your kids gain during your time in our Innovation Incubator makerspace?

What makes a makerspace?

At its core, a makerspace is a collaborative work environment where people can make things - either with high-tech tools or their bare hands. The idea behind a makerspace is that people get a lot of satisfaction from using their own skills to bring an idea to life, and making with others is even more fun.

Think about the last time you made something from scratch. Can you remember the sense of satisfaction when your project was completed? Whether it was cooking, baking, sewing, woodworking or painting - you were a maker!

Now imagine that sense of accomplishment amplified by others in a collaborative environment. People love to share experiences and the experience of creating something is no different. Makerspaces were born out of this desire to create while also working together in a supportive, safe place.

Why is Innovation Incubator special?

While many Nashville makerspaces are reserved for certain age groups - either only kids or only adults - I2 encourages the whole family to make together! You can come to our Nashville makerspace with your kids and share a unique, fun experience.

We also have some amazing equipment that we want you to learn how to use in workshops and classes so you can make independently. This equipment includes technology for:

  • 3D printing
  • Vacuum forming
  • Laser cutting
  • Vinyl cutting
  • Fabrication
  • And more!

The benefits of making

Coming to the Innovation Incubator makerspace in Nashville can help you and your child develop technological knowhow, but also skills that translate to other areas of life.

Making can help everyone develop more confidence in their abilities. It works our creative problem solving and critical thinking muscles too!

If you want to check out the Innovation Incubator makerspace here in Nashville, stop by for a visit! While workshops and classes require registration, anyone can come by and talk to our staff to learn more about the space while visiting Adventure Science Center.
