Heart Beat the Clock

By Science Educators

In just one day, the heart pumps 1,900 gallons of blood through our bodies! To break this down, the heart pumps 1.3 gallons per minute, which is also 2.4 ounces or about 1/4 cup. In this DIY challenge, put yourself to the test to see if you can work as fast as your heart!

You will need:

2 large pots or buckets of equal sizes (at least 1.3 gallons)
¼ measuring cup
A watch or timer
Towels for clean up

Instructions:

1. Fill one bucket with 1.3 gallons (20 3/4 cups) and place the empty bucket next to it
2. Get your 1/4 measuring cup ready
3. Set a watch or timer for 1 minute. Now it’s go time! Try to work as fast as your own heart.  How fast can you move the water from one pan into the empty one within just one minute, using only the 1/4 measuring cup as a scoop?
