POSITION OVERVIEW
 
The Planetarium Manager is responsible for the daily operation, supervision and fiscal management of Sudekum Planetarium, including but not limited to – show research, writing, design and presentation; equipment upkeep, original show production, maintenance and renewal planning; budgeting; strategic planning; fundraising support; supervising staff and volunteers, and serving as planetarium spokesperson. This position reports to the Director of Learning and Collaboration. Occasional evenings, weekend and holiday hours required. May require occasional overnight travel for show sales at conferences.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: Bachelor degree required in physics, astronomy, astrophysics, physical science or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum five years planetarium or observatory experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • High degree of technical ability and interest in maintaining complex projection systems and related equipment, including experience with planetarium technical equipment.
  • Superior communication and presentation skills that captivate an audience. A passion and ability to share and communicate knowledge of astronomy and space science is essential.
  • Ability to effectively manage budgets and project deadlines
  • Ability to plan and think creatively
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition, Premiere Pro) as well as 3D modeling and rendering software, and Microsoft Office Suite
 
JOB ESSENTIALS
  • Ensure highest quality of content, program delivery and guest satisfaction with the goal of growing attendance. Implement processes to measure effectiveness, success and guest satisfaction of programs.
  • Supervise activities of planetarium staff, volunteers and interns including selection, training, scheduling, work assignments and performance evaluations.
  • Oversee the maintenance, alignment, and upkeep of all planetarium projection and computer systems; diagnosing and correcting common problems that arise during the operation of these systems. Lead the selection, planning, and implementation of technology upgrades. Coordinate with Facilities and Housekeeping staff to maintain physical condition of the theater.
  • Design, schedule and present engaging planetarium programs (live and recorded) for a variety of audiences (both children and adults) including; schools (grades PK-16), community groups, and the public with a focus on fostering maximum attendance and revenue.
  • Develop new program offerings as needed to broaden planetarium audiences and experiences.
  • Evaluate, select and negotiate leases for programs to complement the in-house show library and maintain public interest. Modify and install new programs. Research, write, produce and update existing programs as needed.
Customer Service
  • Proactively engage guests in personal, inspiring interactions 
  • Anticipate guest needs and solve guest issues with a positive, courteous and professional attitude 
 
 
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
 
· Majority of work is performed in a professional office environment and in the planetarium, including dim lighting and high volume levels. Some offsite work is required including outdoor, visual astronomy programs. Must be able to stand for extended periods, as well as lift and move supplies and equipment (up to 50 lbs.).
· The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms; use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire regulations.

Sr. Manager of Major Gifts - Actively Hiring

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting directly to the Chief Development Officer, the Sr. Manager of Major Gifts identifies, qualifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards donors and prospects to secure $750,000 or more annually. An ability to empathize with donors and clearly communicate our organization’s mission is key. This position is expected to work with influential leaders in our community, energize team members, persuade prospects and exhibit a high level of perseverance through the completion of all goals and projects. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) or similar professional certification 
  • Minimum of 7-10 years fundraising experience preferred
  • A proven track record of success working with individuals, corporations, and foundations
    • Proven ability to effectively cultivate strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, including Board members, donors, and staff 
    • Excellent written, interpersonal, and verbal communication and presentation skills 
    • Proficient in Word Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Suite, and Raiser’s Edge (Altru) or other CRM/fundraising software  
    • Ability to solicit major gifts through meetings via face-to-face, telephone, or online conference appointments, as well as personalized mailings, in order to obtain first-time or increased major donor contributions
    • Enthusiasm and appreciation for the value of museums, informal science education, and the vital role of philanthropy to a non-profit institution

  • Secure gifts primarily in the range of $1,000 - $25,000 
  • Manage a portfolio of 150 prospects and donors including individuals, corporations, and foundations
  • Work independently and collaboratively with the Museum’s Board, Senior Leadership, and key staff members  
  • Solicit major gifts through meetings via face-to-face, telephone, or online conference appointments, as well as personalized mailings, in order to obtain first-time or increased major donor contributions.

Tinkering Garage Facilitator - Actively Hiring

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position is responsible for facilitating guest experiences in a temporary exhibit gallery, the Tinkering Garage, which will be open to the public April-July of 2021.  Tinkering Garage is an interactive museum space where guests can come in as a family, gather raw materials & have access to basic tools to then design, build, make, tinker, and/or craft items. Tinkering Garage is open to the public Thursday – Monday, so weekend work is required.  Ideal candidates are creative, resourceful, tactful, flexible, comfortable around tools, enjoy working with people, and are able to enthusiastically explain tasks and challenges to guests. This is a temporary position: 3/19/21 through 8/2/21.

QUALIFICATIONS

  •  Minimum of two years of post-high school education or equivalent experience.
  •  Demonstrates a vested interest in a variety of making/building/crafting skills and a desire to learn new skills alongside our visitors.
  •  Candidates should be able to work independently with minimal supervision and be able to multitask, self-start and be an effective problem-solver.
  •  Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work weekends, some evenings, and holidays, if required 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide guidance about Tinkering Garage to all guests that access the space. This includes communicating the rules of the space, where to get materials, how to use tools, and encouraging brainstorming about project ideas, while maintaining a welcoming presence to all guests.
  • Provide hands-on assistance to guests in individual or group settings as they work on creating projects. This may include providing feedback or asking leading questions to encourage creativity, as well as helping guests with using tools (power drills, manual saw, hammer, screwdriver, etc. ) safely. 
  • Ensure visitor safety by practicing and enforcing safety policies. Maintain a clean and safe environment for all guests, volunteers, and other staff. 
  • Assist with supply management, inventory and general upkeep of the Tinkering Garage including cleaning and restocking supplies prior to opening exhibit for daily operation.
  • Work with members of education team to understand learning outcomes of the space and how to facilitate meaningful experiences to guests of all ages.

  • Knowledge and passion for working with your hands on creative build projects.  Knowledge of design processes and ability to use basic tools required.

Guest services representative - Current Freeze (regular part-time and part-time-seasonal)

Position Overview

Adventure Science Center is expanding our Guest Services team. Part time Positions available on all shifts, weekday and weekends. The daily schedule is 9:45am to 3:30pm and will vary on Saturdays.  We're looking for professionals who can display a strong work ethic, professionalism and upbeat positive attitude in a fast-paced customer service environment.

  • High School Diploma
  • Current college students and those with completed college coursework will be given preference
  • Strong communication skills and comfort with presenting to small and large groups
  • Prior experience working with children and families is preferred
  • Theatre/improv training or experience is a plus.

Summer day camp staff - Current Freeze (seasonal)

POSITION OVERVIEW

Camp at Adventure Science Center provides a wide range of science enrichment programs for youth ages 5-12.  Programs combine science, technology, engineering and math in ways that encourage kids to actively discover and examine concepts for themselves. We inspire a life-long passion for learning and teach kids creative problem-solving skills, teamwork, persistence and follow-through in a fun learning environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Encourage a positive learning environment, fostering passion for science and Adventure Science Center.
  • Supervise and interact with campers, facilitating activities and experiments with a focus on scientific content
  • Identify the needs of campers and guests and work to make each experience a positive one
  • Delegate tasks to in room volunteers while creating a positive experience
  • Proactively engage campers in personal, inspiring interactions
  • Anticipate campers needs and solve guests issueswith a positive, courteous and professional attitude
