Position overview
ASC is expanding its education opportunities here and across the city! We will be providing more outreach programs, STEM labs, and science demonstrations for school groups. Your primary responsibility will focus on presenting these day-to-day educational demonstrations and activities for children from various organizations and schools either at the museum or offsite. This position requires strong communication skills, a commitment to guest experience, and a passion for learning and sharing the principles of science, technology, engineering and math.

 
Essential functions
  • Present some school programming at ASC, including but not limited to STEM learning labs and science demonstrations for school groups
  • Assist with outreach programs such as Family STEM events and conference booths
  • Assist with group check-in as needed by orientating students on the bus with rules and wristbands

This position is a PART TIME position. It is responsible for presenting activities in an exciting and enthusiastic manner for museum guests. Chief Development Officer (full-time)

Adventure Science Center’s purpose is to transform lives through extraordinary experiences in science and innovation, and our vision is to become a nationally renowned destination science center that welcomes all audiences.  ASC provides powerful exhibitions and inspiring programs with exceptional guest experiences that deepen the engagement of all ages in science and science-related disciplines. ASC supports STEM education and workforce development through industry collaboration by presenting science in an engaging, innovative manner.

Over the next several years, ASC will undergo a number of exciting changes including exhibit, facility and program upgrades, ultimately culminating in a full transformation from a locally well-known and loved cultural institution to one that has strong regional and national prominence as a leader in informal science experiences. This work will be guided by a comprehensive master plan that ASC is scheduled to complete in 2020. The Chief Development Officer will play the primary role in creating the structure for the major capital campaign that will enable those changes – most notably, broadening community support in both the private and government sectors and working alongside the President/CEO and Board of Trustees to establish and engage a board-led capital fundraising committee.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Chief Development Officer will develop a strong external network of organizational support, and enthusiastically foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization to ensure that the organization’s culture, systems and procedures support fund development and vice versa.  The CDO will lead the Board of Trustees, staff and other volunteers to institutionalize philanthropy and fund development within the organization.

THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Work with the CEO and Board to establish and measure annual and long-range fund development goals, and implement the necessary tactics that reach or exceed those targets.
    • Grow the center’s operating revenue, reserves and financial assistance funds
    • Maintain an active list of funding priorities that can be easily communicated to prospects
    • Maintain a robust Relationship and Fund Development Committee with a strong plan to engage their efforts to support fundraising goals for ASC
    • Oversees and cultivates a balanced funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the organization that will enable it to attract, retain and motivate donors, members and fundraising volunteers.
    • Helps establish performance measures, monitors results and helps the CEO, fund development committee and board evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s fund development program.
  2. Provide general oversight of all the organization’s fund development activities, manage the day-to-day operations of the development staff, and monitor activities through coordination with staff, appropriate committees and the board.
  3. Participate with the CEO, staff and board to define and communicate the organization’s vision.
    • Provide vital input in short- and long-term strategic and operational planning and positioning of the organization.
    • Serve as a key representative and important face of the science center in the community
  4. Along with the CEO, create and steward a robust list of donors and prospects, seeking every opportunity to foster key relationships that have immediate or future strategic value. Network extensively within the Nashville community, while also seeking state- or national-focused opportunities for support of ASC’s mission.
  5. Ensure attainment of the organization’s fund development activities through the selection, development, motivation and evaluation of human resources, both professional and volunteer.
    • Establishes personnel accountabilities for development staff and evaluates performance regularly.
    • Design educational programs in fund development for staff and volunteers; participate as teacher and facilitator.  Pursue formal and informal education for self and others.
  6. Design and ensure implementation of cost-effective fund development programs, employing efficiency while maintaining a high level of quality and solid return on investment.
    • Ensure proper planning including goal setting, strategy identification, prospect research, benchmarking and evaluation to support fund development.
    • Help board members, CEO, other fundraising volunteers and staff identify, cultivate and solicit charitable gifts.
    • Solicits contributions on behalf of the organization
    • Ensure development and writing of foundation, corporate and government proposals, solicitation materials, and required reporting.
    • Ensure design, maintenance and communication of donor and prospect records, gift management systems and informational reports.
    • Ensure design and implementation of cultivation, acknowledgement and recognition programs.

Primary Relationships

This positions reports to the CEO and serves as a part of the Executive Leadership team.  The position supervises the following capacities/staff: annual fundraising, grant writing and administration, membership, and facility rentals/events.

Within the agency, the position has primary relationships with the financial operation, senior management staff, and program staff.  Outside the agency, the position coordinates with the board, fundraising volunteers, donors, members, community leaders, content partners, and funding sources. 

QUALIFICATIONS:  SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND TRAITS 

  • The CDO must be a passionate, outspoken, fun and energetic supporter of the mission of ASC, capable of establishing and maintaining a large network of supporters and promoters of the organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years fundraising experience in a professional position. Membership in a professional fundraising association is expected of a professional. Baseline certification in fundraising, the CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) is preferred.
  • Comprehensive management skills and experience are required including but not limited to short and long-term planning, evaluation, directing and motivating staff, oral and written communication skills, marketing and financial management, values clarification, organizational behavior and development, and governance. 
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a comprehensive fund development team/program and producing charitable contributions. The individual is expected to be a highly competent and inspiring enabler of volunteers and staff.
  • Knowledge and experience in the following areas is required: the nature and dimensions of philanthropy, ethics, motivations for giving and volunteering, research and cultivation practices, standard fundraising techniques including face-to-face solicitation, proposal writing, special events, telephone solicitation, and direct mail, and, development office functions including gift processing, prospect and donor histories, and fundraising reporting. The individual is also expected to have demonstrated experience and confidence in asking people to contribute time and money. Familiarity with computer systems is necessary.

Director of Exhibitions (full-time)

Position Summary

The Director of Exhibitions is responsible for overseeing the creation of engaging exhibitions that that highlights science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) and inspire curiosity for every visitor in ASC’s growing, diverse audience.   

As lead of the department, the Director of Exhibitions is charged with the development of existing and new talent.  With special emphasis on creating a strong exhibitions team, this role will help equip the team to develop, evolve, and evaluate existing and proposed exhibits, with the goals of engaging guests and increasing visitation as well as ensuring accessibility, ease of maintenance, and effectiveness at achieving ASC’s mission. 

This position has multiple direct reports within the exhibitions department. This position will also work closely with the Facilities Manager and Planetarium Manager (Sudekum Planetarium), to support their efforts in achieving the goals of ASC.  

The Director of Exhibitions must exhibit excellent leadership skills and develop a creative environment by possessing a passion for informal science and learning. Experience managing museum exhibition development, installations, and exhibition teams; knowledge of forthcoming exhibition trends and technology; possessing creative talent are all essential.  Experience with maintenance staff is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Education:  Bachelor’s degree required.  In lieu of a degree, 5-7 years with proven track record in exhibition management, preferably in the context of a museum opening or major exhibit renovation.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in successfully managing human and material resources in the supervision and maintenance of museum exhibits.
  • Experience working in a museum environment and working with physical and digital interactive exhibits

Job Essentials

  • Generate and maintain understanding of existing and forthcoming exhibition trends and technology, to ensure ASC remains at the forefront of understanding emerging innovations in our region and beyond.  Including, but not exclusive of:
    • Provide direction for the evolution of ASC’s exhibitions, working closely with CEO, VP and all stakeholders to ensure that exhibits support the mission and vision of ASC.
    • Lead in a positive manner that demonstrates the value of the guest as the ultimate client for the continuation advancement of ASC.
    • Maintain a dynamic array of collaborators ranging from industry, academia, scientific, research, and education communities to allow for new ideas to manifest in ASC’s exhibitions and exhibits. 
    • Create and manage a two year operating budget for exhibition creation, revision and maintenance.  
    • Determine staffing, supervision, training and assessment required for excellence and cost effective exhibition operations.
  • Establish the short and long-term exhibition and exhibit goals for the museum and manage a plan of work to achieve these goals, including but not exclusive of:
    • Help in formulating the museum’s long-range plan for implementing major exhibitions (e.g. Health, Sports and Human Performance) that provide the highest quality experience possible for guests.
    • Assemble a highly skilled team of Exhibit Technicians and Volunteers to ensure excellence within the department and ASC.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of the museum’s exhibits using quantitative and qualitative information gathering and assessment.
    • Help bring together and coordinating content advisory teams for major ASC exhibition to:  help build relationships and engage a wide array of talent; foster collaboration and ensure diversity of thoughts and voices be incorporated into ASC exhibitions; engage ASC’s audiences early in the exhibit development process; solicit feedback and ensure that exhibits exceed audiences’ needs and expectations.
    • Coordinate a network of agencies and/or individuals that can assist the museum with exhibition design, fabrication and multimedia creations, needs and maintenance; Solicits proposals and evaluates bids from these groups or individuals.
    • Build and supervise an efficient exhibit maintenance tracking system to understand costs of exhibit maintenance including labor, exhibit downtime, parts lists and maintenance notes to ensure that budget expenses are controlled.
    • Manage overall workload and work plan of all personnel to implement cost-effective, daily exhibit maintenance and revision.

Exhibit technician (full-time)

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Exhibit Technician is an essential member of a team of professionals who maintain the interactive science exhibits and are responsible for the care and maintenance of a 100,000 square foot facility.  The position is responsible for multiple tasks and duties that helps ASC properly function seven days a week and performs tasks ranging from simple daily routine to complex projects.  

JOB ESSENTIALS

With the guidance from the Director of Exhibitions:

  • Inspect exhibits daily. Communicate with team to promptly identify damage, malfunctions, or wear on exhibits. 
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance on interactive exhibit components, many which contain mechanical, electrical, electronic, or computer-controlled devices. 
  • Identify and diagnose chronic or systemic defects in individual exhibits, which reduce their efficiency and reliability, or compromise their intended function. Make adjustments, modifications, refurbishments and upgrades to improve function and reliability while preserving the visitor experience, educational content, and design impact of the exhibit.
  • Assist with the set-up and tear down of tables, chairs, AV, laptops, projectors, and decorations for Special Events, Public Programs, and Facility Rentals.
  • Additional duties as assigned by manager and or director.
  • Assist Facilities staff by starting HVAC equipment, turning on lights, and repairing floor-care equipment.

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND TRAITS

  • Demonstrated skill in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical and electronic systems including computers, monitors, projectors, speakers and media playback devices. 
  • Experience programming and maintaining open source microcontrollers.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a wide range of fabrication materials and processes involving wood, metal, and plastics; experience with a variety of finishing techniques. Some artistic ability. Proficient in the use of hand and power tools, soldering equipment, and electronic measurement instruments such as the digital multimeter.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Conscientious and detail-oriented; must have an appreciation of craftsmanship and quality and the ability to follow through with paperwork, record-keeping, and documentation.
  • Welding, electrical, pneumatic, PLC, and lighting experience a plus. 

QUALIFICATONS

  • Education requirement of High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 5 years cumulative experience in maintaining mechanical and digital interactive systems and/or exhibits preferred.
  • Post high school course work, technical degree, associate’s degree, or business or vocational certificate preferred.
  • Must complete ASC training in order to work with hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and move supplies and equipment (up to lift 50 lbs. unassisted, and 100 lbs. assisted).

Adventure Science Center is expanding our Guest Services team. There are positions available for the weekend schedule at this time. We're looking for professionals who can display a strong work ethic, professionalism and upbeat positive attitude in a fast-paced customer service environment. .

  • Provide quality retail customer service through guest interactions and sales

The daily schedule is 8:45 to 5:30 and will vary.  We're looking for professionals who can display a strong work ethic, professionalism and upbeat positive attitude in a fast-paced customer service environment. Janitorial/Housekeeping Staff (part-time)

POSITION OVERVIEW
This position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of all areas of the Adventure Science Center buildings. Custodians (Housekeeping) will perform both routine daily and periodic scheduled tasks as well as special projects, to ensure the quality, upkeep and cleanliness of the Center meets the approved established superior standards. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of one (1) year related custodial or housekeeping work experience preferred
  • Ability to operate various types of custodial equipment including: upright and hand vacuum sweepers, floor cleaners is required
  • Able to follow oral and written instructions and able to read cleaning chemical labels with knowledge and understanding of proper application and use of those chemicals.
  • Reliable, courteous, pleasant disposition, customer-service oriented and collaborative team player with a positive attitude is require
  • Must be able and willing to work evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary
  • Typically, walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items (up to 40 pounds unassisted), and 100lbs assisted are required.  Also, the employee must have manual dexterity, visual and auditory acuity.
  • Must pass required background check 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain daily responsibilities of vacuum, sweep, mop, clean carpet, clean and dust walls, railing, glass and stainless steel
  • Clean and sanitize bathrooms and restock supplies
  • Empty all trash cans and replace liners
  • Handle recycling material
  • Maintain supplies and equipment in clean and operable condition within individual service closets
  • Carry out periodic special cleaning functions
  • Assist in updating the maintenance log on a timely basis with items for Facilities staff to repair or replace. 
  • Interact and communicate effectively as needed with other team members and guests

Summer day camp staff (seasonal)

POSITION OVERVIEW

Camp at Adventure Science Center provides a wide range of science enrichment programs for youth ages 5-12.  Programs combine science, technology, engineering and math in ways that encourage kids to actively discover and examine concepts for themselves. We inspire a life-long passion for learning and teach kids creative problem-solving skills, teamwork, persistence and follow-through in a fun learning environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Encourage a positive learning environment, fostering passion for science and Adventure Science Center.
  • Supervise and interact with campers, facilitating activities and experiments with a focus on scientific content
  • Identify the needs of campers and guests and work to make each experience a positive one
  • Delegate tasks to in room volunteers while creating a positive experience
  • Proactively engage campers in personal, inspiring interactions
  • Anticipate campers needs and solve guests issueswith a positive, courteous and professional attitude

 

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND TRAITS

SPECIAL CONDITIONS   

  • Summer shifts may vary week to week: Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 5:30 pm
  • This is a full-time temporary, seasonal summer job
  • Candidates must be available the following 2019 summer camp dates:
    • May 28 through May 31 for camp training
    • June 3 through June 28  SUMMER CAMP IN SESSION
    • July 8 through August 9 SUMMER CAMP IN SESSION

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to manage large groups in a fun, educational environment
  • Positive attitude required: strong desire to work with and inspire children and adult guests from diverse backgrounds in a fun, learning atmosphere
