ASC Maker Camp

Members: $500
Non-members: $550

Age range: Ages 12 - 18

In this five day camp in the Innovation Incubator (i2) makerspace, participants can explore the “What IIF” – Innovation, Iteration, and Fabrication process by designing and creating a custom suit of cardboard armor. Build skills with software and makerspace technology, and grow 21st century skills as you collaborate with other students and staff to create a fictional world and your role within its story!

Day 1: We’ll look at how societies throughout time have historically used armor as protective gear and cultural signaling, and how contemporary films create and use props to give life to fictional worlds. As we ideate the physical and social environment of our own imaginary world where our armor protects us, we’ll explore how armor functions and how this imaginary world might influence a unique design. Using this knowledge, we’ll begin to draft out a design for our armor and create a collaborative plan for making our very own suit. Students will generate a map and history of their collaborative world, and build their character profile. We'll begin our story together!

Days 2 - 4: We’ll begin the construction process in earnest, working together to create different pieces. Hands-on fabrication leads to hands-on problem-solving as we try on pieces and figure out how to make the imagined into the wearable. We’ll learn techniques used by cosplay artists, costume designers, and set designers to create, age, and customize our suits as we make them. We’ll work with the Adobe Illustrator software to design elements using the lasercutter, and study safe lasercutting practices for cutting cardboard. Students will leave with lasercut samples and some mini-props. By Day Four, we’ll finish our suit of armor and add any final decorative touches. As we go, we'll continue to explore the world we've created, learning about ourselves and its history through collaborative storytelling.

Day 5: Scanning ourselves with the Kinect to create a 3D Model, we’ll place our digital selves in action poses to create an action figurine! Using our own virtual elements in Tinkercad, we’ll digitally build out a scene together, bringing our world to life. As we finalize our adventure, we'll host a photoshoot in our armor to celebrate the successful end of our story. Students will take home their pieces of armor, and have a completed figurine printed and shipped to them after the class.
