About Our Planetarium Theatre

Our story begins with Tony Sudekum. A Nashville native and president of Crescent Amusement Company, we were priviliged to number him among our founding board members. After Tony's passing in 1946, his widow made a donation to purchase our first star projector. Armand Spitz, the inventor of the projector, was the guest of honor at a ceremony dedicating the Sudekum Planetarium on March 3, 1952.

After renovations and two complete rebuilds, our planetarium has grown and improved. At the center of the Judith Payne Turner Theatre’s 63-foot dome is the GOTO Chiron optical star projector, which produces a staggering 6.5 million stars. Its breathtakingly realistic night sky works in tandem with Digistar 5 fulldome visuals. This hybrid system is unparalleled throughout the United States and additionally boasts a SkyLase laser projector. Combined, our projection systems will sweep you away with wonders of the night sky, cutting edge science, and stunning journeys across our planet, galaxy, and beyond. Come explore with us!

Any Questions?

What times are shows presented in the Sudekum Planetarium's Turner Theatre?

The Sudekum show schedule varies throughout the year. Click here to get the most current program information and showtimes.

Is there a show about what's visible in the current night sky?

Yes! Sit back, relax, and watch the stars come out during Nightwatch, a live program that highlights the stars, constellations, and planets visible in the evening at this time of year. Come chat with us after the show - it's a great opportunity to ask questions or even try to stump the presenter. Check our schedule for showtimes.

How much do planetarium tickets cost?

$7 ($3.50 for ASC members)

$6 ($3 for ASC members)

This is our standard daytime pricing - special events and evening prices vary. Subject to change.

What if I only want to see a show, but not tour the Adventure Science Center?

Most daytime planetarium shows require member or paid admission to Adventure Science Center before purchase of a planetarium show ticket. However, if you arrive at the Science Center after 3 p.m., you can purchase tickets to any remaining planetarium show without paying general admission.

Or, join us for after-hours shows in the Sudekum Planetarium. A perfect way to start your evening or a great after-dinner date!

Do children under age 2 require tickets?

Children under the age of 2 may only be admitted to a planetarium show for free if they are seated in an adult's lap. If you wish your child to be seated separately, a separate ticket is required.

What technology brings the show to life?

At the center of the Turner Theatre is the GOTO Chiron optical star projector that fills the dome with more than 6.5 million stars (a stunning improvement from the 2,400 projected by its predecessor). This breathtakingly realistic night sky is combined with a 4K Digistar 5 fulldome system that projects images and animations of the wonders of the universe from horizon to horizon. No other planetarium in the country offers the seamless integration of these two technologies. The gently sloping seating and powerful 13,000-watt, 5.1 surround sound system give Sudekum guests a unique, immersive, and exhilarating experience.

Are Sudekum Planetarium's original productions available in other planetariums?

Yes! Sudekum Planetarium has created original productions for planetariums since 1987. If you're interested in bringing our shows to your planetarium, please get in touch for more information!
