Position Title: Makerspace Coordinator
Department: Informal Engagement
Reports To: Informal Engagement Manager
FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt, FT position working 40 hours per week
Typical schedule: Thursday – Monday, 8:30 AM – 5 PM
Salary: $21/hr

INFORMAL DESCRIPTION

The Makerspace Coordinator brings science and technology to life through making! In this position, you’ll lead one of Adventure Science Center’s most popular spaces and engage hundreds of learners each week. Our Innovation Incubator makerspace will be your canvas—each week, you’ll dream up new activities and bring them to life with the aid of other staff and volunteers. At your disposal will be a suite of awesome tools, including 3D printers, laser cutters, and more.

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and facilitating programming within the Innovation Incubator, a state-of-the-art makerspace at Adventure Science Center. The primary responsibility of this role is to focus on developing programs that align with monthly themes and events, and then execute those programs for a wide array of visitors including students, event patrons, and public audiences. Effective communication skills, commitment to guest experience, and a passion for learning and sharing the principles of science, technology, engineering, arts/creativity, and math are essential attributes for this position.  

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Experience facilitating hands-on science or technology programs is preferred
  • Experience working with youth and families is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills 
  • Professional appearance and demeanor required
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week, weekends, and some evenings required

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Programmatic Support 

  • Operate and oversee Innovation Incubator makerspace during all public hours
  • Engage visitors with equipment present in the space such as 3D printers and other STEM-related technologies
  • Work cooperatively with fellow Innovation Incubator makerspace and Adventure Science Center team members to develop and lead programming for public audiences and special events
  • Supervise part-time staff and volunteers, including training, daily supervision, and professional development
  • Plan activities and prep supplies for 600 visitors each week
  • Perform daily cleaning of makerspace including vacuuming, taking out trash, wiping down tables, and keeping an organized space

Customer Service

  • Basic knowledge of customer service principles, techniques, systems, and standards
  • Proactively engage visitors of all ages and abilities with personal and inspiring interactions while showing genuine enthusiasm about the science center
  • Anticipate guest needs and solve issues or concerns with a positive, courteous, helpful, respectful, and professional attitude 
  • Willing to work with and provide direction to support-staff, volunteers, and any other visitor in Innovation Incubator makerspace

Operational Support

  • Attend quarterly staff meetings and weekly Informal Engagement meetings
  • Report technical, maintenance, safety, and security needs within Innovation Incubator makerspace to the appropriate staff member or department
  • Perform core operational functions of visitor safety and wayfinding 
  • Assist during emergency and evacuation situations

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND TRAITS

  • Desire to look beyond traditional disciplines and explore interdisciplinary intersections of knowledge
  • Ability to engage with visitors and guide them through activities
  • Desire to inspire guests of all ages with art, science, technology, and the power of making things
  • Willingness to learn how to operate and maintain a 3D printer including:
    • Troubleshooting problems with prints
    • Finding and slicing STL files for print
  • Willingness to learn how to operate and maintain a laser cutter
  • Desired software skills: CAD, Adobe Illustrator, MS Office
    • Basic computer skills and the ability to figure out not-often-used software
  • Finds enjoyment in making. Whether it be visual art, audio, paper-craft, or electronic inventions
  • Exhibits the following qualities: patient, hardworking, problem-solver, resilient
  • Ability to speak or sign an additional language is preferred, but not required

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations
  • Walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items (up to 25 pounds unassisted), and 50 lbs assisted are required  
    • At times, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work 
    • The employee must have manual dexterity, visual, and auditory acuity
  • Requires fine motor skills and some repetitive motions
  • Work schedule and work hours are variable based on operation requirements
