Explainers are trained by ASC learning specialist to add value to our guests’ experiences by presenting Discovery Cart programs or by facilitating educational activities within exhibits throughout the science center. These programs are fun and add information and excitement to our guests’ visit and take their experience to the next level. Docents may also assist ASC science educators with programs and presentations during area outreach programs, discovery labs, and events. Pre-requisite: 20 hours of service as a general volunteer. Additional training required.
On select Mondays, Early Explorers serves an opportunity to introduce preschoolers to the wonders of science before the Science Center opens to the general public! Exhibit exploration, planetarium show, story time, and more! Early Explorers Assistants will assist ASC Educators by leading activities and demonstrations as well as accompanying the group as they embark on their morning activities!
Do you like working with your hands, fixing things and talking to people? Volunteers will assist educators in the Innovation Incubator, ASC's Maker Space, by engaging guests through various hands-on activities and programs relating to innovation and technology!
Camps at Adventure Science Center consist of a wide range of enrichment programs for youth in grades K-9 that combine science, technology, engineering, and math in ways that encourage kids to actively discover science for themselves. Camp programs are conducted on weekdays during the summer and school breaks. As a camp assistant, volunteers are responsible for helping camp counselors as well as the camp coordinator. This includes helping set up and clean up camp activities and supervising campers.
As a Homeschool Assistant, volunteers will assist ASC instructors with reaching the homeschool population of Nashville and surrounding areas through informative and exciting science classes! Homeschool Assistants may help with class set-up and break down and classroom management duties such as helping students with materials, following the group on museum tours, and helping respond to student questions! Homeschool classes will take place on every other Tuesday.
Our Family Fun Labs offer opportunities for families to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics in engaging, hands-on ways together! Each lab presents new challenges with age-appropriate educational materials and activities to spark excitement in all participants. Volunteers will assist Educators with set-up/break-down of labs, check-in and facilitation of activities!
Monthly Theme Facilitators are trained by ASC science educators to add value to our guests’ experiences by presenting carts and activities unique to ASC monthly themes. These programs are fun and add information and excitement to our guests’ visit and take their experience to the next level.
Every day, ASC educators work hard to create material for our monthly themes! As a Super Science Saturday Activity Demonstrator, you help our educators bring their vision to life by assisting with education carts and activities related to our monthly event themes. Super Science Saturdays occur on the first Saturday of every month. On-site training will be provided.
Interested in helping out with our Way Late Play Dates? Maybe you want to help out at our Halloween Spooktacular Special events shifts consist of hands-on science activities and live science presentations and are typically on Saturdays or after hours during the week. Special events volunteers can help with anything from guest check-in, wayfinding, managing giveaways, and much more! Special events volunteers are also trained by ASC science educators to add value to our guests’ experiences by presenting carts and activities unique to our special events themes. Note: Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older to volunteer for Way Late Play Dates.
Adventure Science Center offers a wide variety of full dome programming in the Sudekum Planetarium. Planetarium Assistants will assist with collecting visitor tickets, seating guests, parking strollers, providing basic guidance to the public during the planetarium show, and helping check for debris/lost items among seats between shows. Planetarium Assistants will be stationed inside the theater during shows, and see a variety of shows throughout the day. Note: This position involves extended time in a low-light, irregularly shaped theater with curving staircases.
Demonstrate exciting gift shop merchandise to guests in the store or lobby! Volunteers may also assist visitors in selecting an ASC remembrance to take home or help gift shop team members with general retail functions.
BodyQuest Exhibit Facilitators will assist guests as they undergo a hands-on exploration of the human body! Volunteer facilitator’s role will include assisting with exhibit facilitation, education, and supervision. Interested in something hands on? Exhibit facilitators can facilitate cart activities related to the exhibit to guests! Note: Must be able to articulate thoughts and ideas in a clear fashion.
Space Chase Exhibit Facilitators will assist guests as they undergo a hands on exploration of our Universe! Volunteer facilitator’s role will include assisting with exhibit facilitation, education, and supervision. Interested in something hands on? Exhibit facilitators can facilitate cart activities relating to the exhibit and planetarium to guests! Must be able to clearly articulate information.
Designed for children ages six and under and their accompanying grownups, Destination Exploration offers an assortment of fun, hands-on activities designed to encourage discovery through play. As a Destination Exploration Host, volunteers will assist in facilitating play and hands on activities for young children and their families.
Temporary Exhibit Facilitators assist guests in our temporary exhibit gallery by greeting visitors, providing information as guest’s transition through the exhibit, and facilitating an educational experience for all! Our temporary exhibits change every 3-5 months and volunteers must complete a scavenger hunt for each exhibition before they may volunteer in the exhibit.
Do you enjoy working on projects behind the scenes? Administration volunteers will work with Adventure Science Center staff in the offices on various small projects. These tasks can include preparing mail-outs, prepping educational program supplies, filing, scanning, data entry, taking phone calls, etc. These shifts are available as needed by administrative staff.
