The Respiratory System

By Science Educators

This baggie experiment demonstrates how your lungs work in your body

The first thing that happens in the respiratory system is when we breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Exercise has the ability to optimize your body’s cardiovascular, nervous, muscular, and endocrine systems. Exercise increases the demands on your body and, as a result, your body compensates by increasing muscle tissue, vascular networks, neural connections, and efficiency. This all starts with – and requires – breathing!

You will need:
A sandwich baggie with a zipper top
Scissors 1 plastic or paper straw
Masking or scotch tape

Instructions:
1. Zip your plastic bag tightly closed and cut a small edge off one of the bottom corners
2. Insert a straw into the baggie
3. Tightly wrap some tape around the bag to simulate a lung with bronchial tubes
4. Breathe into the bag to see it inflate!
