July Theme: Marine Science Month

By Adventure Science Center

It's officially the start of summer and we're dreaming of a trip to the ocean.

Join in on our fantasy as we dive into Marine Science Month throughout July.

Check out a few of the activities we're facilitating this month and explore the science behind it all.

Themed programming will take place:

Activities in the i2 Makerspace

  • July 6-7: Suminagashi Water Marbling
  • July 13-14: Clay Ocean Animals
  • July 20-21: Pipecleaner Coral Reefs
  • July 27-28: Angler Fish Pop-up Car

Early Explorer Storytime Books and Activities

  • July 1: Life in the Ocean
    • Early Explorers will learn about the zones of the ocean; the lighter-colored areas are closer to the surface and the darker areas near the bottom of the ocean. Then, explorers will sort marine life into the different zones of the ocean based on where they live.
  • July 8: Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean's Most Fearless Scientist
    • Early Explorers will make a shark friend out of a paper tube. They will attach a small fish to a string and pull the string through the shark's body to demonstrate the food chain.
  • July 15: Where the Ocean Meets the Sand
    • Early Explorers will make colorful jellyfish decorations to hang up in their homes.
  • July 22: Lights On! Glow-in-the-Dark Deep Ocean Creatures
    • Early Explorers will learn about the deepest parts of the ocean and the marine life's adaptations to live there. They will make a ferocious angler fish complete with an LED glow light.
  • July 29: Inky the Octopus
    • Early Explorers will make an octopus craft using cheerios to highlight the thousands of suckers that cover the legs of the octopus.

Time: Every Monday at 9:30 am
Location: Eureka Theatre on the second floor
Ages: Pre-K (Kids Under Five)

Floor Programming

Dogfish Shark Dissection

Visitors will be able to watch as a staff member dissects a dogfish shark specimen. Guests will have the opportunity to feel the rough skin, sharp teeth, and hard cartilage of this marine animal.

Oil Spill Clean Up

Visitors will help our staff clean up a simulated oil spill while learning about the importance of keeping our oceans clean for the marine life within. They will experiment with different absorbent materials such as Q-tips, cotton balls, and sponges to see what works best for cleaning up oil.

Sea Life Collections Table

Explore our marine specimen collection which includes sea turtles, coral, sponges, seahorses, and an array of incredible shells. Learn about the adaptations that these sea creatures evolved to be able to live in the salty aquatic environment.

Ocean Zones Activity

Visitors will match the marine animals to the zones they call home. They will learn facts about each of the zones including trench, abyss, midnight, twilight, and sunlight.

Adventure Science Center is open:

Monday, Thursday, Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Join us this month for science fun for all ages!
